For 117 years, Dahlman Construction has been shaping the Milwaukee region with expertise built on integrity, craftsmanship, and long-standing client relationships. Today, the company is embracing new opportunities for growth while staying true to the values established by founder John A. “Honest John” Dahlman in 1908.

Building Advantage sat down with Andy Matheson, Vice President of Construction, to talk about Dahlman’s history, their approach to project delivery, and how they’re positioning themselves for the future.

Chris Mambu Rasch: Dahlman Construction has more than a century of history in Milwaukee. What does that legacy mean to the company today?

Andy Matheson: Our history is something we take a great deal of pride in. Dahlman Construction was founded on simple, strong values—quality work, fairness, and earning trust through every job. “Honest John” wasn’t just a nickname; it reflected the way the company approached every project.

Those values remain at the core of who we are today. Over the years, we’ve completed thousands of commercial, industrial, and institutional projects throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. With more than 40 employees in the field and office, we consistently complete around $15–20 million in projects each year, all while maintaining the same commitment to craftsmanship and integrity that has defined Dahlman for over a century.

Chris: How has the company evolved its services and capabilities over the years?

Andy: We’ve grown significantly in terms of expertise and project delivery. One of our biggest strengths is our ability to self-perform key trades like concrete, rough and finish carpentry, and demolition. This gives us more control over project schedules and the quality of craftsmanship, which in turn, helps our client’s bottom line.

We’ve also expanded our management capabilities with leaders who have experience in construction management, scheduling, and sustainable building practices. Having LEED-accredited professionals and a team committed to modern project standards allows us to take on more complex work while maintaining the craftsmanship Dahlman is known for.

Leadership stays closely connected to each project, ensuring consistency, accountability, and a shared standard of quality across the company.  In our organization, no matter what your title, everyone functions as a project manager.  Each of us is responsible for taking our project no matter the size, from conception to completion.

Chris: What types of projects do Dahlman specialize in today?

Andy: We work across a wide range of industries from commercial offices, industrial and manufacturing facilities, financial institutions, retail and restaurant spaces, and institutional buildings. Our focus is always the same: collaboration, transparency, and doing the job right the first time.

What sets us apart is the consistency in how we deliver projects. Whether it’s a large industrial addition or a highly detailed commercial build out, we approach every project with the same level of care. Clients know we’re committed to long-term value, not just checking a box and moving on.

Chris: Dahlman has been successful for decades, but you’re also planning for future growth. What does that look like?

Andy: Since joining Dahlman in 2022 and stepping into the Vice President of Construction role, one of my top priorities has been strengthening and expanding our relationships throughout the greater Milwaukee area. The industry is constantly evolving, and we’re taking a proactive approach to meet future opportunities. We’re investing in new capabilities, exploring emerging markets, and positioning our team to continue delivering the exceptional service and craftsmanship clients have come to expect.

Our partnerships with CARW, ACEA, WHEA, and Building Advantage continue to open the right doors, and our relationships with the Carpenters, Cement Masons, and Laborers Unions ensure we have experienced, qualified tradespeople ready to execute projects at the highest level.

Chris: What excites you most about Dahlman Construction’s future?

Andy: We have a legacy that spans generations, and at the same time, we have a team energized by new opportunities. There’s tremendous potential in expanding our reach, taking on new types of projects, and continuing to develop our team. Clients can expect the same craftsmanship, accountability, and integrity that have defined Dahlman since 1908. That legacy is our foundation, and it guides every decision we make.
