Sprinkler Fitters

Sprinkler fitters design, assemble, install, inspect and maintain all types of piping systems. These skilled welders are required to read blueprints and maintain an extensive knowledge of plumbing codes and regulations. They specialize in fire protection systems, including overhead sprinkler and hose systems, fire mains, underground systems and underground closed valves.

Math, reading, manual dexterity, problem solving, mechanical ability, physical stamina, fast-paced thinking and reacting, communication, hand/eye/foot coordination, comfortable with heights, blueprint reading, decision making, detail-oriented

Application Requirements

  • At least 17 years old

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Valid Drivers License

  • Reading Requirements: ACT 17 or Accuplacer 248

  • Arithmetic Requirements: ACT 15 or Accuplacer 237

  • Mechanical Requirements: Accuplacer 47

Education and Training

  • 5-year apprentice program

  • 8,400 hours of on-the-job training

  • 512 classroom hours

How to Apply

After the application has been completed, either in-person or online, and all of the above requirements have been satisfied, the applicant will receive a sponsorship letter to take the Accuplacer Testing at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), or WRTP/Big Step. Once all of the tests have been passed, the applicant will be notified by mail to appear before The Milwaukee Area Sprinkler Fitting Joint Apprenticeship Committee for an interview. The interview score is combined with the test scores and this total score determines where the applicant is placed on the waiting list. As contractors submit requests for apprentices, applicants are pulled from the top of the list. The applicant is required to pass a drug-screening test upon entry into the program.
